I am thinking of club racing with a 17.5 motor
pinion size--20t 48 pitch

There should be a slight gap between the pinion and spur use a piece of paper to help set the gear mesh , too tight will overheat the motor and could possibly make it slow as you mentioned but the nimh batt could contribute to that as well, too loose and you'll strip spurs

Had a great first day of racing. Only change I made was 4000 in the front diff. And loosened the belts a little.

I could only get a 34 tooth pinion on wish I could get a couple more outta this thing. It was a tight squeeze with the verticle motor mount ver 2.

With a little bit of dremel work and fitting a smaller spur gear I've managed to squeeze a 43 tooth pinon on.

Cheers
Rob.

No, I'm using Robinson Racing machined spur gears.
I also had to dremel off 2 of the 4 "lugs" on the alloy spur gear holder so I can use almost any brand of spur gear that doesn't have the extra holes.
This means I only have to use 2 screws to hold the spur gear assembly together.

Cheers

to change Ackerman you change the size of shim under the cap of the steering arm where the links attach to the center. there is an end screw. for more it's less shims. I'm running mine glued with 6mm of shim for as little ackerman as possible.

Yes, the small raised sections, or you can drill extra holes into your spur gears.
I chose to dremel them off as I don't have a drill press, and don't trust myself hand drilling the spur gears.

With 2 lugs & 2 screws instead of 4 holding the spur gear I've run a 13.5 blinky in the car and it all hung together.

Cheers
Rob.
