johnday - I started off with 1000. I experimented with 500 and it made the rear end squirelly. I ended up at 2000 for mod to make the car easy to drive. For 17.5, I suggest sticking on the lighter end - between 500 and 1000

Ohh I watched them multiple times. I think that the things that are going to break these diffs are on power hits to the wall, things all us normal people do. Stresses such as that are the things we worry about with the spec-r diffs. I must admit that they did some pretty crazy things. I just think that if we can build something more structurally sound for about the same price, why not.

The Xray team here in the UK are running the Spec R gear diff in Mod and Super Stock and we have not had one single issue. The TRF team would have been using a std Spec r diff i can be sure on that.
If it aint broke don't fix it right?

If, as reported, those Team cars were
torn down every round---- that will have included the replacement/inspection of the gear diff gears.
So the condition they were in after each run is probably not available.(to us)

After testing MANY different oils, IMHO, it is best to start with a 1000wt and go from there. If the car is stable and you need more rotation go with lighter oil... If you want to tame it down some, go heavier. We used to run 5000 in the Serpent gear diff, but that was with half the gears... I would say in really high traction with mod, you could be as high a 4000 - 5000.... talk about forward bite......

I bought a Spec-R diff after seeing it in Tim's car at Reedy (Thanks for the tip Tim!). So far, I've run it pack after pack after pack with nothing but Mod and it's been bulletproof. It does leak a tiny bit so I'll eventually RTV it. I've taken it apart multiple times to test different viscosity oil and the internal gears look brand new.
