Smile New to VTA

Hey all, I'm currently building my first VTA car and have a few questions, (for now, more to follow for sure!). Picked up a TC3 Factory chassis off ebay, also a Novak 21.5 Ballistic motor and GTB ESC new from hobby shop. Just wondering what is a good 2 cell, hard cased, 5000mAh battery to purchase? Also what tracks are running outside (hey, its summer!) in the Chicagoland area?
I'm new to brushless motors and ANY tips, advise, suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Hope to have car completed sometime mid May, 2010.
Thanks, Gary

Gary, these folks carry the Zippy brand hardcases. I use the 4000 but they also have 5000 at very reasonable prices. You'll get alot of opinions so be prepared. I've had my first 2 of them for over a year and they're still going strong. Just bought 3 more. Also, great choice on the ballistic. Remember that in September the rules change to 25.5 so depending on your club or tracks rules you may have to buy the 25.5 stator and swap it. Last, in order to get the right gearing for the BL you'll need to make a couple quick mods to the chassis and motor cam.
Have fun !! Heres a link I found on the mods.

A 5000mah battery isn't really necessary for VTA. Especially if you are trying to save money. I am using a 3200 with plenty left to spare. I am pretty much only using about 1100mah for a 8min race with a gtb and 21.5. With a tekin and boost you will probably use more but 5000 may be overkill for VTA

+1 on that. I run a TC3 in VTA and rarely use more than 1200Mah in a main. The lower rated batts will be lighter as well. My 4000 is 50 grams less than my 5000. A TC3 will be at least 100 grams over minimum weight, especially if you shoot more than 2 coats of paint on the body.

The Ballistic and GTB are a great start. As far as gearing is concerned, Robinson makes a 60-tooth spur and a 35 pinion that will give you a 4.29 FDR. You'll have to dremel out some webbing under the pinion, but there will be no need to modify the motor mount. The FDR rule will go away when the 25.5 rule kicks in. Also note that most tracks have outlawed boost and turbo, so your GTB will be as good as anything out there.

My only other advice is to get a good bumper
