Motor brush hood alignment tools etc.

How about the current crop off 19T spec and modified motors, do they still need the brush hoods aligned?

The KT unit looks to be a nice unit.....not to mention they are quality company and willing to stand behind their products.....plus it does its job, which is align each side by itself.
Fixed timing motors ALWAYS need their brush hoods aligned as best as possible for optimal performance.....if you don't, you could actually retard the timing......though sometimes a motor can use LESS timing. Modified motors, its less critical....as you can just increase the timing, but you will still get uneven brush/comm wear and increased arching....both of which are BAD. Its always worth the ten minutes to get them aligned correctly.

Got it, I'll get a spring post wrench asap.

Get the integy 4.5mm wrench....its the best unit out there and works great. You should also get a Sonic Fiddlestick to measure spring tension.

I will second the Integy tool and the Sonic Fiddle Stick. Those 2 tools combined with your alignment bar will be invaluable to your tool box. You will get your brushes to last longer, com to stay a little nicer, less arching, and better power if you sit and spend the time.

Jim recommends not using a reamer on stock motor bushings. He says to "Just polish them with Mother's Billet Polish and a Q-tip in a drill motor."
Gotta get his Big Jim's Black Book for another perspective on such topics.

I take the plastic thing from the Q-Tip and put some Blue Magic on it and spin it in a dremel.

Motor brush hood alignment tools etc.
Guys;
So far (knock on wood) on my EPIC Stock Motors the Hoods have aligned perfectly with the Tool through both Hoods (Brushes inspected with magnifier after break-in).
I have gotten some Motors with bent Hoods in the package and they needed special attention.
What I do find with some Motors is the Brush fit in the Hoods is VERY sloppy. This allows the Brushes to rock back and forth excessively. In these cases I have replaced the Hoods.
I've also gotten some BRUSHES where the serrating operation resulted in a Brush face that was not even close to being parallel to the Com.
It definitely pays to inspect everything closely.

Does anyone uses Integy Digital Spring Dyno? Any info will be appreciated.
Thanx

www.bigjimracing.com , you can order them through money order or paypal....grab some tribo and an alignment bar while yer at it.
The spring dyno is cool, but its VERY pricey and basically does the samething as a fiddlestick for about 5 times the price.
