Hi guys,

I would like to make my own foam tires from foam blocks. Does anyone know what kind of foam it is? EVA? Polyethylene? And, where can I get this foam to make tires?

I know I can buy ready-made stuff, but I am not interested in going that route.

I use slippers. You need to feel the compound with your fingers and choose the right one.





I prefer the grip of the slippers foams over Tamiya tires. Around 3 hours of run time.

Now that is innovation! I was thinking along the same lines...like those cushions people use to kneel on while gardening.

That's a neat hole saw. Homemade? I figured I'd have to use two separate holesaws...one to cut the tire out of the foam, the other to cut out the center.

just bought the holesaw as is from a hardware store. just be careful, the rubber will bite/grab to the saw especially during the last few mm of cuts. saws are sharp, not worth saving a few bucks should you cut yourself. must have good equipment and body parts as far away as possible.

but i'm curious, is it really worth it ? I can be very smart for unusual tire size, but otherwise you have to take account for :

Price of the sandals
Price of the holesaw
Risk of getting injuried
Impossibility to compare setups
inconsistency from sandal to sandal, even from the same kind/source
Time spent doing this
Price of the glue
Hassle of ungluing the worn tire
breathing all these chemicals, foam dust
Cleaning after doing this

Etc...

I am quite avaricious, but still I think I prefer buying ready to race tires !

At first, I thought this thread was a joke.

Then I went and found out that you can buy pan car wheels with no foam. Is there a source of foam besides slippers?

Everyone has their preferences for different reasons. As far as I am concerned, there is something to be said for doing it yourself. Not only is there a sense of accomplishment, but there is also a learning experience from doing all the things you mentioned above. And, for the ultra-picky racer (not me), it would make sense to make his own tires so he can select his materials.


Pakk, I believe that foam tires are made from EVA foam (someone correct me if I am wrong). You can buy EVA puzzle mats of various colors and thicknesses at a local home center, on fleBay, and at various online stores.

Goto teamcrc.com. They carry donuts all scales including 12th scale, 10th sedan and 235(pan cars), 8th scale. Been redoin' donut tires for years. Useing flip flop rubber seems to be kinda hard on trueing machine. Trueing does get smelly when trueing, you have to do it in a good ventilation.
