hey guys im building a practice track here in a couple weeks and trying to get everything planned out and a cool layout. but i have some questions
-how wide should i make each lane?
the space that i have available is 35ft wide by 70-90ft long.. and its on a slight hill.. not much. and theres only going ot be 3-4 cars at most running at one time.
-should i use clay dirt to build the entire thing or just regular top soil dirt?

and if anyone has a pic/drawing of a cool layout they could show me, would be great. i cant deicide how i want it sooo lol.

Use the top soil as a base, then put a later of clay down to give it a good surface. It will take alot of raking to get it perfect, but worth it. After you do the raking, spray some water on it then roll the heck out of it.. You probably could get away with 8ft and 10ft in some area pending on your design and still make the track interesting and not boring.
My personal track is about 158ft long by 88ft deep and im running 10ft-13ft lanes.

I'd stick with the natural topsoil and pack it hard. It will make less mess and cost less than bringing in clay.

Sounds like you're only going to have room for about 3 lanes (at 10' per lane) if you went length-wise; but of course you can snake it around on one end at least.

If you have a local track you predominantly race at, I would take the toughest section, or mimic parts of it since you want this to be a practice track.

First pic is a Sattelite image of my yard , second pic is from my roof. Those are only 2 of the 4 designs i have on file. I went with 8' lanes in many places and it worked out fine and made us all better drivers due to it being harder to pass. My soil is very dry so i brought in some red clay by F150 and spread by hand in the parts i wanted the most traction so i ended up with a two tone track.Total distance is about 100' by 55'

35'x80' is pretty tiny for 1/8th. You'll probably have to do 7-8' for the lengthwise lanes, so you can put 4 lanes across. It's going to be tough to make a cool layout, but just try and pack as much stuff as you can into that tiny area.

ok i just went out and got exact measurements and its 35ft wide by 115ft long. thats probly good enough.. and i can have 8ft wide lanes. now i just need to think of a layout haha

I have built a couple of tracks in peoples back yards - the dirt is the hardest thing you have to worry about. It depends on what you like. I have a guy that brought in 200 tons of non-clay dirt which turned out nice but needs a lot of up keep.

Are you planning to use the earth in your yard or bring some in. What style of track do you want, US - such as Nitro Pit or something like The Farm. Or do you want to go Euro style, less jumps and more technical.

How are you going to move the earth, dirt is heavy and you will need like a Bob cat or some kind of earth mover.

this is not going to be a sanctioned track so I would say, if you want to learn how to drive, then you can go with 6 foot lanes, no wider than 8feet.

Are you building a drivers stand? You will need to see.

My track is 8 ft wide the whole track and is 70x160. I use just regular dirt, no clay, I rake and water all the time. I did bring in about 20 tons of the same dirt when they was build a house accross the street, and used for the jumps and banks. my track is more technical, with big air right berfore a turn.

Take you time and do it right, dont rush

yes i have a bobcat that im going to build it with then shape the jumps with a shovel or something then roll it. and i have enough room for 8ft wide lanes so i might as well make them that lol.
and yea im going to have a bunch of clay hauled in. but im debating on making some of the cornors just reg top soil to make them rough and technical. but most of the track will hopefully be clay. it really depends on how much clay we can get.
and yes we are going to build a drivers stand about 5 or 6ft up.
