Default Clutch shoe

Hi all, would like advice how you service the carbon clutch shoe. I just use light sand paper to sand on the contact area and also sand on the clutchbell. Is this good enough to service the shoe? Another is how we know the know need to change? Service and use it till almost the shoe spring flat with the shoe? Thanks.

I never sandpaper my clutch shoes, but I do scuff the inside of the clutchbell with aluminium foil.

I would just make sure the edges are smooth, but no sanding the shoes - just a light sanding of the bell
