The Mantis is a great entry level truggy easy to work on, and learn the basics on setup etc, as there aren't massive amounts of adjustment on the car which in my case is a good thing cos you dont get yourself confused with shock mount adj etc..
With a few upgrades:-
CNC front / rear hubs
CNC Lower sus arms
Tires / Wheels (eg.Proline)
They are a good reliable car, easy/cheap to repair..
Good luck with the Mantis, nothing better than giving some bigger $$ truggys a honest run..
If you can steer one of these sucessfully, look out when you get hold of a good pro-truggy

All this talk makes me want to get one again lol! I always loved the way the truck looked. If you want a couple tips.....
1- get the cnc front knuckles. I broke only one but they are good insurance
2- get the cnc motor mount. The stock one will crack on you. It looks sturdy but it is cast and a little weak.
3-make sure you always check your rear chassis brace where it bolts by the shock tower. If you lose the screw it sucks because it takes some special spacer or bushing thats hard to find.
That is all I really did to mine and it was solid.

Just got back from racing with my Robitronic Mantis. I get to the track and start warming up. Then i see some guys pointing at my truggy and laughing. Really ticked me off. Just so happens i smoke both them in the TRUGGY A-MAIN. Winning my first event with this truggy. Beating them both by 3 laps. Now no one can tell me this is a cheap truggy becuz i made it a
1st place all star.

i drive the tamiya truggy and its the only one
at the track i race at
to bad i'm not a better driver though
just tired of everyone having the exact same truck

HAHAHAHAHA I will never forget their faces after the race when they came up to me and wanted to see what I was running. and when they saw a bone stock t-maxx the jaws dropping were sooo funny.

I have the same deal here. I run a GS racing XUT advance truggy. This last sunday at my local track I qualified 2nd and everybody that was pitting around me said my truck look the best over the losi's, mugens, and AE's. If it wasn't for the stupid gate start that they got now I could of won but settled for 4th just missed 3rd by a couple of seconds...

From what I can tell in my short time doing this... the winning formula is 60% driver skills, 30% setup, and 10% is car. In other words, good drivers and proper setup will always win over having the trickest ride.
However, as you get better, it seems the car does make a difference once you get to a certain level. The car could mean the difference between the A and B main if only tenths of a second is seperating the pack.
The bigger question is how much more dominant would you be with a better car?
I don't think anyone woudl say you can't win with cheaper cars, but why handicap yourself if not necessary?
