electric 1/8 scale
What is the best electric 1/8 scale buggy or tuggy to buy for the first time off road racer? I hoping not spend a lot of money, not over $500.00 if possible.

If you start everything from zero then you definitely cannot buy all the stuff with just $500.......
And for first time off road I dun recommend 1/8 th for your starting point.....
1/10 truck or 1/10 buggy should be better for you

Well, the most popular buggies are the Losi 8ight, RC8, and the Caster Fusion. Of course, you have your other custom conversions too.
If money is no object, I'd get the Losi 8ight 2.0.

Fusion RTR is very good value for money.
Only hassles that guy keep speaking off is overheating motors but that is more a user error as most dont know or know how to check temps and the general ins and outs of the newer 1/8 brushless cars.
I have been running a RTR for 3 months now and have had no issues at all besides bendig a chassis after hitting a stationary 1:1 car wheel.
swapped out the bent dog bone and plastic brace and its as good as new.
One tip for reliability is to change the programming on the included esc to operate in forward with brake mode. It comes preset with reverse and this can lead to averheating and essentially applies to most esc's which will be less efficient when running reverse.
Another plus is that it uses more popular 7.4v lipo batteries so you dont need to buy a specific 4s lipo battery. This means if you have other touring cars or 1/10 buggies etc... you can use the same batteries.

It depends on what you want. if you are serious about racing, get the Caster pro, but you will need a lot of other parts to complete it, but you are still $200 ahead of the other brands and at least the Caster was designed as a standalone electric instead of a copy of a conversion kit.
If you get a Caster RTR, you will still need batteries and a charger, but that is by far the cheapest alternative out there.
I have heard rumors that there is going to be an announcement that Caster USA is switching over to speedpassion motors and escs......

Caster
I use to run nothing but 1/8 kyosho mp buggys. I rescentley switched to electric and got out of nitro all the way. I also rescentley got my first electric 1/8 buggy. I went with the caster fusion ex1. Being that I ran what a lot of people would say was one of the best 1/8th nitro buggys, I am extremely impressed with the caster. I went with a roller so I could put my own electronics in it. Overall, I think I can say that I am a caster fan from now on. If you get one, you will not be disapointed.

I want to get into 1/8 buggy racing, but like usual there is too many options. I was going to go the Castor RTR but have heard they are not competative. I have been offered a MXB5 and was going to deck it out with the Speed Passion combo. Would this be a good option or would it be better to go with either the Losi 8 or the RC8? What is the flavour at the moment? I dont want to buy something that isnt competative and then have to spend more money to be up there.
