Nothing beats the spec-r gear diff. I think the BD5 spec-r fits the photon with a few shims.

The Upro diffs suck. I have gone through 3 of them. And im sure you saw Tony shred his yesterday.

I hear good things about the Spec-R. I did see Tony's ripped up, but i think it was probably due for a rebuild. Mine is too new to know of its durability...but it was butter smooth yesterday with no problems... not even a leak or seepage.

Ill see if a local has a spare i can try to see if its even worth shelling out the coin for a second gear diff...

Dave, Mine hasnt leaked either but when I pulled it out to change the fluid in it, it is feeling pretty notchy and rough. I haven't run boosted with it either so I am not sure about this u pro diff anymore. Need to inspect it and go from there.

i ran top photon gdiff before..it's so rough...then i switch to spec-r , it's butter smooth...but it's does leak alittle though

I just bought a Photon and will start building it this week. I also bought a BD5 Spec-R gear diff too, what size and approximately how many shims will I need for a good fit? Also what is a good starting point for the diff fluid? I will be running 17.5 no boost, rubber tire asphalt, medium size track.

If you are running it up front out doors on asphalt my understanding is 120k is a good starting point.

indoors rear I would start at 2k depending on traction outdoors on asphalt I think I would start at about 10k and adjust from there.

If your going to buy gear diffs.. I would go ahead and spend the few extra bucks and buy the Real Yokomo Gear diff.

lower the center of gravity...
0.5mm lower than the original motor mount.
