Default Brushless Motor Bearing Removal

I've heard racers discuss replacing the standard bearings in brushless motors with high performance bearings. What tricks do y'all have to remove the bearings? I have a mod motor that needs a bearing or bearings replaced, but I'm hesitant to just start banging on the bearings to get them out. Do you need a torch? Or will a heat gun do? Are there different procedures for different motors?

My only experience doing this was the bearings almost fell out of the motor without any real effort on my part. I was replacing the bearings in an LRP 3.5T with ceramics and both bearings came out with just a little pressure.

Did you see any performance gain?

Just to avoid anyone who feels the need to flame (not you PNGordie, but just in case) I am replacing the bearings because I can hear the ones in the motor squealing and this is after I tried oiling them. I can feel the rotor dragging . . .

On my Hacker 17.5 the bearings just fell out with a little tap. The tolerance on the parts is very loose. I am not sure about others. If the bearing is already bad, just put a screwdriver on the inner race and just bang it out. On good bearings you should never touch the inner race.

the motor did sound smoother but i was not convinced any performance gain came from it.. it might have brought temps down a little on the motor side of things, but it didnt give me that extra lap i was looking for

I wouldn't worry so much as a performance gain, but a bad bearing grenading on you while racing. I can imagine that would damage the motor...

If you are working on a Novak motor they don't recommend replacing the bearings because they are glued in the aluminum endbell. I found the way around that was to put pressure on the bearing with the bearing removal tool (like the one noted above) and then with the bearing tool held in a vise, heat the endbell with a heat gun. The aluminum expands more than the steel bearing and when the glue bond breaks you can hear a "pop" and the bearing comes out easily the rest of the way.

Here is a tool by Hyperdrive to remove and install the bearing. I tried it it; works great. No heating neccesary.

http://www.lefthander-rc.com/catalog...oducts_id=1378

When reinstalling the bearing I use a high temp red Loctite to glue the bearing back in. Motors sometimes get too hot for the standard grade of red loctite.

with the Speedpassion motors I use the eraser side of a no.2 pencil, works great!!
