I have a PE temp gun and I think it works fine as a quick reference only.
I have seen lower end temp guns differ as much as 40 degrees.
What you are getting with the high end guns is greater accuracy, so, if you use temps as your primary tuning tool, then, maybe it's worth it to pay the extra money.
I've found, though, that tuning by performance and that nice light line of smoke has really been the trick. When I first started nitro tuning I used the temp gun way too much and wasn't getting all I could out of my engines. Any more I just pop it on there from time to time to make sure I'm in the ballpark; so, for me the cheaper temp gun is more than adequate.
Hope this helps!

the exergen is worth it hands down.. sometimes you can catch the older style on ebay for cheaper and they work great
