I see people telling everybody to align their brush hoods to get good power for their motors. No one has ever actually explained how to do this. How do I do it? I would be doing it on my Chrome Stock RS and P2k Pro.

Get a brush hood alignment tool. You need a bar type, not one of the fancy ones. Put new brushes in the motor and run it for 30 seconds or so at 2.5 - 3 volts. Remove the brushes and check the see if the brush wear is even. I like to use serated brushes because you can look at the serations and it is much easier to tell if wear is even.

If the brush has worn evenly, leave it. If not, slide the tool in to the hood and twist the hood in the appropraite direction slightly. Replace the brush and run again. Kepp trying until you get even brush wear. Then do it with the other side.

Make sure the test brush, if you use one, is the same size as the one that you use to build your motor. Each manufacturer's brush is a different size, i.e. Trinity, Reedy.

There's another company that makes one that's mounted on the outside of the hood to achieve proper alignment. Unfortunately, I don't remember the company name (Parma or maybe Racetech, believe it or not, I even have one)???

I hate to be the voice of dissent, but the Parma unit will align the brush hoods but the brushes themselves will not be aligned. It works to a point.

What follows applies mainly to 27t stock motors...

The problem is that the brush moves very slightly in the brush hood when the armature turns, slightly cocking the brush. Each hood has to be aligned independantly, using the method Speedo mentioned.

The racetech bar is the tool I see recommended elsewhere for the job.
