1/8 brushless racing formats
I started reading the 1/8 conversion thread about 5 weeks ago. Awesome stuff!
This one's dedicated to discussing the best race format for the fastest growing area in off road racing: 1/8 electric!!!
A few thoughts:
What's harder, winning 1 20 min main or an ifmar style triple A main at 7 min each? The longer single A is interesting however too "nitro"IMO with aditional, undue stress on the batteries/electronics.
The 3x7min mains is surely harder to win. Not to mention that there would be less stress on the systems.
It's also something to remember that at electric-only events, it'll have to be somewhat fair in terms of driving vs. Marshaling time. If it were to be 3x7min mains, perhaps it could be best out of 2 qualifiers to be fair [at 1/10 + 1/8 electric events club level]
Would the lower mah batteries work better if the mains were no more than 10 min(triple style), or 15 songle main style?

man if it's not a big event theres no need to run a tripple main or a 20 min. main. single 7 minute main after 3 rounds of qualifying is more than enough at a club / local level. If it were a big event I would opt for a tripple 7minute a- main, but single 7 minute for b and lower mains.

Me personally I am of the opinion of this format:
10 minute qualifers
10 minute main
The 1/8 scale electric configurations being used should easily be able to make this. You also get more actual track time, which since nitros usually do something like 5 minute qualifiers with a 20 minute main, if running 2 heats and 1 main, you now have equal race overall time. I know that is something nitro guys have mentioned as a big preference to electric is how much actual race time you get.
ultimately you have to go with what works for you track, but, at the most, I would say 15 minute main would be the most I would do right now for race length.

I don't like triple A mains. They are great if you make the A. But for the other 20 or so guys. All they have to look forward to is a 5 or 7 min main and go home. That is a big sticking point for most nitro racers. The hv brushless setups out now can easily go 10 or 15 min and even 20 with the right set up. So run 15 or 20 min A-mains and 5 to 10 min lower mains with bump ups like nitro and everybody is happy. I'm a converted nitro guy and the hole reason I switched was I like the electric set-ups. Fast and clean,, LOL. But if they start trying to force outdated electric formats on the 1/8th scale I'm gone

We did 6 minute heats and a 10 min main for B and a 20 min main for A. If there hadn't been a big mistake in the a main pro with a restart, I know that maxamps 6000 packs will go 20 minutes, but the Caster does run 2 packs....
I made it no problem winning the B with 5000 packs for 10 minutes....

With the batteries we are working with today, I don't agree with the 15 minute mains. Sure you can stick a huge brick in your car but then it will handle like crap and only raise the costs.
I agree with Cain on the 10 minute qualifiers and 10 minute mains. You can run 10 minutes with practice laps and the extra bonus lap after the clock runs out on a 4S 4000mah pack. The packs are very inexpensive and the cars are perfectly balanced and light weight with a 4S 4000mah pack.
I understand that many guys in this class are coming over from nitro but I think you have to get the long mains and pitting out of your head. The longer mains will come as the technology improves. And what I mean by improves is better quality, higher capacity cells in a smaller package at an AFFORDABLE price. You also have to remember that the longer you push these things the hotter they will get. This has two negative side affects. First you can burn things up and cost the end-user a lot of $$$. This will only push people away from the class. Second it creates an "un-safe" situation where guys are pushing the envelope and can risk injury to others.
Longer qualifiers will give you additional track time. The maximum I would go on the mains is 12 minutes when you take into consideration 1-3 practice laps (they're not warm-up laps anymore....LOL ) and teh bonus lap after the clock runs out (total 14-15 minutes)
