I've had my car for about a year now, and only just decided I'd like to give racing it a shot. I showed up at the track a few days ago just as they were finishing prep and opening up for practice time.
I've got a pretty good handle on things and the car appears to have adequate speed (so far) but my traction was lousy.
To save on description, this is what I was using at the time. (shut up, it's fun. )

I have a new and unmodified body to use. But the only other tires I have are the stock R's.
I've searched the forum with several keywords but I am having a heck of a time getting help with 1/18 foams. I'll get lots of results but with either gigantic threads too hard to search inside for the keywords, or short threads that don't help. Google isn't much help either. Which leads me to think there aren't many options for foams -- perhaps just the Associated brand. I see T foams, but too big and I have no means of cutting.

The track is asphalt and they spray it down with soda. Do I have to settle for the AE foams? I don't have a similar road nearby to test the R tires mounted -- would they grip well on a cleaned/prepped asphalt track?

Looks as if you are using foams made for the RC18T. Try pt# ASC21306, they are made for the 18R so they will fit under the body. Also try johns BSR tires, they make foam tires for the 18R but make sure it specifies for the RC18R. Also check out the micro and mini forum on this site.

If you are on a track with soda sprayed down, ditch the foams, you will get traction roll with every twitch of the steering, I use the stock ass tires(rubber) and it is perfect, untreated and uncleaned of course. Even using simple green to clean the tires will cause traction roll...

+1 on the stock AE Rubber vs. foams for prepped asphault tracks. The stock rubber gets good traction and decent wear for the $ Foams on treated asphault in this car = traction roll.

the toyz and lonestar hobbies also offer foam tires for the 18r. i haven't tried them myself yet -i'm happy with the stock tires, as they seem to work well enough on carpet.

what surface do you run on? do you like the foam tires better than the stock rubber tires? do the foams hold up long enough? i'm thinking about ordering a set from thetoyz and i'm trying to figure out if they would be worth the money. i don't race, but i plan on going to the local carpet track for fun and practice once i put my 18r back together.

we run ours on asphalt with track treatment... a couple of the guys tried running there stock tires but the car wouldnt hook up, if you are racing outside i highly recommend them!!!

i might have to try them out. i just wish i could find a place that races an 18r class in michigan. the 18r has somehow became my favorite rc!

Hey thanks guys. I had never heard of TheToyz until this thread. It has some good stuff on there for my 18. There has been a few things I've been wanting, and I knew they exist, I just didn't know where to find them -- upgraded shocks, Mamba motor heat sink, etc... Super. I'll see if I can get that Niteline wing to attach to my Kamino body, too.

I'll have to pick up some foams, too, to accompany the stock 18R tires. I'll take both to the track and see which ones I like better. I'm not sure what shore rating would suit me best though. I understand the trade-offs of traction vs. wear. I think I'll start at 35.
It's interesting that some of you like foams and some of you don't.

Too much traction with the 18R does create some issues with traction roll. We run on carpet and the stock tires seem to be the tire of choice until it wears down too much. I run both the AE foams and the 3Racing rubber tires which both seem to provide a little more traction than needed which usually results in traction roll. I just adjust my driving style to try to compensate for the traction roll. The stock 18R tires are kind of pricey for what they are and the short wear of the tire. Just my two cents!
