Another dumb post tho: 2 scenarios; 1 bigger spur and smaller pinion; and 1 smaller spur and bigger pinion. BOTH produce the same ratio.

Is the any advantage of selecting a bigger spur and smaller pinion or vice versa?

IMPOSSIBLE... simply does NOT work.

I'd think you mean instead:
A) bigger spur with a bigger pinion
B) small spur with a small pinion
both of which give the same ratio?

There's an earlier thread from last month discussing same topic.
There was some opinion that (B) gives slightly better acceleration.

isn't there something like you want the smaller because it's less rotating mass? But I dont see how this would make a difference.

if you set your gear mesh vertically, a bigger combo will lower the CG(motor will be closer to the chassis), just depends on the car...

i ve heard use smaller spur will make your motor run cooler . but i personally do not feel any difference..

That's called "gearing down" or using a lower (numerically *higher*) ratio.

Makes your motor work less hard, so it eats less current.


But severely over-revving your motor due to gearing too low
will actually make it heat up more too...
