I just got a new collet for my flywheel. How do I install it? anything special I should know? Any dos/donts?

I just dont want to screw it up, seems like a fragile piece.

just slide it on..

if its a different length than than the old one, youll have to shim different...

I dont really know wat shims are, or their purpose, or where they go, or if I had any on before.

Ill go try to put it on now, ill post again in about 15 mins on my progress.

collets dont usually go bad...

shims are the little thin washer looking things that keep your clutch bell from moving too much

Ok, I think I know what shims are, I have some but dont use them... I probably should.

as for the collet... I cant get it on.

Do you put the collet onto the shaft thingy, then put the flywheel over it?

Or do you put the collet into the flywheel, then slide it over the shaft?

is there any special tricks to doing it? heating up the collet or something maybe?

normally a lot harder than getting one on..

yeah I got the old one off already... i forgot it was in there.

I heated it up with a propane torch, then pressed on it hard with a flathead screw driver.

Then I put the new collet into the flywheel, used tools and pressed real hard, now im having a hard time getting it onto the shaft thing that its supposed to go on.

If it just slips on real easy, whats stopping it from spinning freely like it did before (when it was shot) when my engine is screaming at 40,000 rpm?

the flywheel keeps it tight

take it out of the flywheel so it can open up and slide onto the shaft

never use tools to press anything ONTO your engine...

wow, this is really starting to frustrate me, I hate when this happens.

It slides onto the shaft fine, then getting the flywheel on is impossible, even when putting it in a clamp.

It slides into the flywheel fine, then not onto the shaft, not even 1mm, even with a clamp :s

Its impossible via hands... even with a clamp it didnt seem to make much progress, I didnt try very hard with a clamp as I was scared to bent/break something. Ill try to find a tut on google or youtube or something.

hmmm, What if I put the collet into the flywheel, then snugged it up onto the shaft (it wont go over it, just bumps up against it), then tighetened my clutch nut, would that push the flywheel back onto where its supposed to go?

ps: what does this guy mean by "Also, don't use something in the glow plug hole to lock the crank, the force you will need will turn your rod into a micro-scale boomerang with ease...channel locks on the flywheel are a good idea."

when you say:

you mean its all the way to the engine??

if so leave it there, put the flywheel in the shaft and tighten the nut...

youll need to hold the flywheel with channel locks to get the nut tight is what he means...

the nut will force the flywheel onto the collet

the flywheel isnt just going to fit over it when its on the shaft

youll need to tighten the nut to push it back, cant do that with just your hands

yes, the collet alone slides onto the shaft fine all the way when its alone, but not when the collet is in the flywheel, the flywheel makes it close a little bit (obviously) and thats stopping it from fitting onto the shaft.

Ill go try the nut trick now.

sweet, I think I got it figured out, the clutch nut is super tight, the flywheel is pushed all the way back, I just hope I didnt bend/wreck anything in the process.

well have to wait till my clutch springs get here, then I can finish it and take it for a drive and see if it works, im 95% sure I installed it properly.
