I just called up the HPI offices in California @ 1-949-753-1099. The customer service rep assured me that there is no such thing as a 2004 edition, all r40 kits are the same. I asked him that is it possible that the Japanese edition might be different and he said its possible but he would not be privy to that information. I just got one from Ebay and was wondering if there was such a kit with the hop ups that i would be doing anyway because as all of us know its far cheaper to buy a kit that comes with all the goodies than to buy them yourself.

The customer service rep that you talked to is wrong. There is a 2004 R-spec version that is sold in the Asia market that has all of the hop-up goodies that cost us a ton extra to obtain. The 2004 R-spec kit has the light-weight chassis, front one-way, aluminum-threaded shock bodies, the hollowed two-speed and front pulley shafts, along with the light-weight woven graphite front and rear shock towers. There made be a version now that has the light-weight, 0.8 gears as well. You will have to search through the previous pages to see where to other guys are ordering them from.

This is the 2004 edition. I have bought one so it definately does exist. There is even a 2004 conversion kit to upgrade a non 2004 to 2004 spec.

Trust me..the 2004 kit exist's..I have 2 unbuilt kits....they also include the lw motor mounts and ti screws....

RCMODEL.com has them....You can't blame the guy for giving you that answer.....He's not required to know another countrys product....I can tell you I'm a Miele vacuum and appliance dealer in NJ.......I could care less what Miele vacs they sell in germany.....

How's the performance of the Sirio 5 port Evo 2? Im planning to get one for my R40 since I busted my 3 port RBX12. Our races here does not conform to the IFMAR or ROAR rules. Displacement should just be .12 and that's it.....Im also considering Novarossi's new 7 port RR12 L5 coz most of our LHS here claims this is the engine to beat and a lot are already using this here but its a bit expensive than the Evo 2...the ABC constructed evo 2 is the one out on the market...is there an AAC for this already?

If you can wait just a little bit longer..try to pick one up right after the Jan-mid spring. The reason being is that as the dollar strengthens the yen falls. Basically you get more for your dollar. If you have been watching the news about the Federal Reserve they have been raising the rates slightly but at a steady pace with another one planned in Feb. When the rate increases, the foreign exchange value of the dollar increases as well. So what does this all mean? You get more for your money. I've been meaning to pick up another 2004 kit but I'm waiting until the exchange rate goes to 110 yen or greater. Basically....at that exchange rate I would be paying around $288 for a 2004 kit. Now that's a deal. It has all the hopups already.

Of course...its more complicated than that because Japan's economic position at that time can effect the exchange rate. It's a gamble but worth it if you can wait. Oh and get it from RC Champ in Akihabara, Japan.

Oh and another tip...if you have a friend in Japan...that is in the military then ask them to send it through the USPS system. My brother sent a package at the priority mail rate (around $12) and it took less than one week. Not bad?

Alan Greenspan finds his way into the rc world, lol. Excellent advice, hopefully the chips fall the right way.
I still cant find a conversion kit for the U.S. spec one tho. I have one NIB that i have on the way here that i got at a low price on ebay, so if a conversion kit exists it might make better sense for me. Anyone have any ideas or info on that?

I have noticed that on the set-up sheet provided by HPI, there is no setting for droop, but there are settings for rebound and bump stop. Which of these settings would be considered droop? What is rebound? Lastly, what is bump stop? Thanks

I just want to know what can be the lowest gearing I can put on it. So far what we only have here is a .8 20T for the 1st gear so I used a 60T spur instead of 59T. Where can I get the charts for gearing? Or should I rely only on what came with the box?

Rc King,
The rebound setting is what you will want to use for droop, the bump-stop setting is used to limit the travel of suspension so you do not scrape the lower chassis. Most people do not use bump-stop as it can seriously limit your suspensions capabilities.

That chart that came in the 2-spd package provides the available ratios. You will see that the 0.8 ratios are taller than the stock gearing ratios.
