autoset: I personally have not experienced what your mentioning and I haven't heard about this. I'm sure there is a reason for this but you will need to figure it out. The first thing I would do is to change the Deans connector on the pack as we have seen some connectors that fit loose which would increase the IR. It's also a good idea to bend up the springy part of the male connector once in awhile as a tight fit will keep the IR as low as possible. I would then try a different motor. If that doesn't do anything I would borrow/change speed control.

Danny - If my batteries, SMC 4000mah LiPo's, get too hot from being inside a car for a few hours (125F), is it normal for the entire pack to swell about 1-2mm in thickness? I fear my being lazy after a long day of racing may have ruined my batteries.

On a side note, I did notice that even prior to today's HEAT Extravaganza, that my two SMC 4000 LiPo's were already starting to swell slightly as the cases were no longer tight fitting on the battery.

What do you think?

Swelling can happen due to the packs being overdischarged , overcharged , stored with to much charge. Storing them in a hot enviroment with no storage charge could overdischarge them. There might be other things that cause Lipos to swell. One of our oval drivers has a pack that swells slightly when charging it's still running strong on the track. So I would think your packs will be fine but if you do have issues with them just email me or PM me.

How are you charging the packs ?

I charge them at 1C (4.0A) or a little over at 5.0A on a CORE RC charger or Duratrax ICE charger. 3hrs in the fridge cooled them down and the swelling is gone, at least back to the point they were before being left in the car.

How do I go about estimating these values? I have a Hyperion Charger. I hope this is not a dumb question...but im not sure what to do. Do I discharge then charge back up?

The latest firmware for many Hyperion chargers has a "storage" mode that will charge/discharge the battery to 60% for you. I believe that's the the airplane guys have settled on. Danny seems to think it's quite a bit lower. I haven't done any tests, personally. What charger do you have? Perhaps you can update its firmware.

Are you balance charging or have you used a balancer ?

Not sure what could be the cause of the swelling but the fact that you have 2 packs that are doing this tells me something might be causing this in your treatment/routine. It's normal for the odd Lipo pack to swell as this is just the nature of Lipos but to have 2 packs do this makes me wonder.

Continue using the packs and if they don't feel right on the track or swell allot email or PM and we will work something out.

I would discharge the pack down to 6 volts and then put charge back into it. Some chargers have a function for charging back up to a certain percentage or mAh.

Our 3200 and 4000 packs are 2 cells in series. Our 5000 is 2 cells in parallel which are then put in series. This is called 2S2P.

Hi Danny,

Any chance of having the new 5000 packs with the wires coming out of the top by the IIC? Thanks.

There is a chance we will have them in time for Vegas. The cases are being molded this week.
