Anyone heard of these? SCiB Li-Ions? 5 min charge, 5000+ cycle life?

These cells might make it in sedan.
For all of the 4 cell classes, all of the new cell chemistries are going to need to make cells that actually fit. Not just one type of car but all of them. 4 cell cars, and 6 cell cars. Stick and saddle packs.
The A123 cells are nice for bashing but until they make a cell that actually fits they'll never make it into the hobby.
Any new cells should be able to be sized the same as the popular NiMh cells. LiPo has done it for 6 cell and they still need to for 4 cell.

Is that why they fit perfectly into any saddle config? The one weakness of lipos. Two cells side by side is the same width as a nimh is long.

If A123 ever makes it in this hobby, thats a big IF, it will be atleast a 2-3yrs. Lipo is here to stay for the near future, it's simple, Lipo fits in TC and A123 doesn't.

Again, if ANY cell manufacturer is going to make a real impact on RC they're going to have to make cells that work in ALL of the classes. This means the cells have to be about 45mm square and about the same thickness as a current sub-C.
At least the SCiB cells have a more useful voltage and could be split up into the classes that we currently have. 4.8v for 12th and oval and 7.2 for sedan/offroad.
I'm a pretty big fan of the LiPo and new chemistries. The fact that you only need 1 or 2 packs of LiPo cells for a whole season (or more) is a huge plus. The missing link is the 4 cell classes.

Well A123 may not have batteries that fit but there are many manufactures that will make LiFePO4's in soft cells just like LiPO. That means we call could be seeing a 6.6V battery pack the size of a 4-cell pack very soon (3 months?). Better for the 1:12 and Oval guys than a full blown 7.4V and much safer. Those oval guys are harder on batteries than anyone.

Impressive charge performance. What are the discharge numbers like? I agree that to succeed they need to come up with a better form factor for us. Although, with Lipo now ROAR legal I could see a new form factor becoming dominant with manufacturers changing chassis configs to fit them. After all they need to do something to make a "new" car

Wow, i made a thread on these cells about 2-3 months ago on this very forum. no one cared though...
i think its great though! maybe they'll make ones without the metal cases, so weight shouldnt be an issue. they'd be the right voltage for 4-cell.

Instead of waiting for random tech to influence the hobby, why not just use already available tech & improvise to make racing better. If you think these are cool there are some new cells that suposedly hold 10x the energy density of lipos. However they are very young in the testing & development stages of them.
