Motor Lathes (Alternative BITS)

Does anyone have any idea how to identify the particular bit that was included with a motor lathe?

I have the Hudy lathe, and I think that I may have ruined the diamond bit. Until I'm ready to purchase a new "diamond" bit, I want to get a couple of carbide bits. I've found a local shop that does mail order (Maryland Metrics www.mdmetrics.com) that sells tool bits. While the shop is in the same state, it's not exactly around the corner. The bits are classified as:

E, D, C, BR-L, and AR-L
sizes: #4 (1/4"), #5 (5/16"), #6 (3/8"), #8 (1/2") and #10 (5/8")

The price for the 1/4" are $1.50 each or $3.25 depending on manufacturer.

Default bits

Geppetto is probably either an AL-4 or an AR-4 but others will work like the BL series

I get my bits from McMaster-Carr

www.mcmaster.com

you can get a diamond bit there for just over $50 if you send me a picture of your bit Ill tell ya which one it is.

Geppeto,

The Hudy lathe cuts from right to left and that means you need a AL4 bit because the cutting part (carbide or diamond) must be facing down.

The rule is - if your bit is on the rigth it's AL(eft)
if it's on the left (like the Trinity lathe and a few more it's AR(ight)

The Diamond bits from McMaster are excellent and the PN number you need 8if you buy from them is:
AL-4 - 3316A42 - $51.67 (Diamond)

Carbide:
C2 - AL- 4 - 3367A341 - $3.57
C6 - AL- 4 - 3367A131 - $3.42

Here you have the URL for the carbide bits page:

Thanks guys. Looking at the photo in the tool catalog, it was difficult to identify the bit that I needed. I was leaning toward the AL bits. I just needed someone to agree with me.

Geppetto,
I purchased the carbide bit that Antoniop recommened to me ( he told me one was better for our purpose of cutting commes) from McMaster. I purchased five bits for my Hudy Tech Lathe and I am still using the first bit. Plus they are less than $3.50 a piece.

Thanks again antoniop.

For those that need the right hand bits:

3367A121
Single-Point Carbide-Tipped Tool Bit Rh, Style #Ar-4, Grade C-2, 1/4" X 1/4" X 2"
$ 3.42 Each

and

3316A32
Polycrystalline Diamond-Tipped Tool Bit Ar-4, Right Hand, 1/4" W X 1/4" H X 2" L Shank
$ 51.67 Each

Now a question;

Why should I spend the extra dollars on a diamond bit ?
