Hey guys , i will totally honest with you and say that i am a complete newb when it comes to electric. So here is my question: What would be a better motor for the rustler xl 5 ? i dont want brushless, too much $$$ but is there better than the titan 12 motor ? and battery wise i think i got that down . so basically i need soem ideas for better and faster and more torque motors.

Personally, I would go with the CP. Less maintenance. But you can't go wrong with an Orion, either. And yes, either would be significantly faster.

if you are useing a xl-5 the motor limit 14 turns and to be safe i would go with a 16 (always stay 2 turns away from your esc limit) turn if you can find one.

12 turn limit for 550 size motors
14 turn limit for 540 size motors(almost all motors are 540 sized including the motors mentioned above)

newb question coming......What des the 'turns' mean in a motor exactly ? and do you have any specific motor in head for a rustler that i could go for . im not too sure what to look for.

here is the basic meaning for turns: the more turns on a motor the slower the motor. the lower the turns the faster the motor.

here is an explanation of the excelaration of the motor(basic): example 12x2. the 2 is how much excelaration the motor has. the lower the number the more excelaration.

i know orino makes a 16X2 but not shure checkpoint makes one.

Turns are basically the number of times that a wire is wrapped around each pole of the motor. Ex: A 19 turn motor will have 19 turns of wire around each pole of the motor.

A higher turn motor will have less RPM with more torque. A lower turn motor will have higher RPM with less torque. Basically, the lower the turn motor, the greater your top speed will be assuming the motor is geared correctly.

I would suggest checkpoint motors for brushed motors. Maybe look into the 19 turn checkpoint money motor.

its a Team Orion Formula SV2 Pro BB 17x2. 17 Turn, Double Wind motor

for me its a good replacement, but you have lots of choices. Just dont go lower than (i think) 15turns.

nice, im starting to get what the turns are all about, thanks alot fo rthe explanations, it really helped helped, and did that motor give some good increase in speed, ....etc ?

lets not forget maintenance. a high performance motor wont last long if neglected.

try to keep it clean, a dirty motor doesnt work well.

try to keep it cool, use a slightly smaller pinion gear (1-2 teeth).

after about 15-20 runs, the motor will need some more meintenance. the brushes will more than likely need replacing. also a deep thorough cleaning will help things further. some motor spray will do the trick. But, i would suggest researching, or getting help from your local hobby shop before taking your motor apart, it can be daunting for new commers. but once you get how a motor works, it's all easy.

i alway's clean mine around 4-6 run .. i alway's look at the brushe's and oil bushing's and com drop the brushe's....

I would go with a 14turn checkpoint. It will last a good 50 runs w/out a need to cut the comm. With a brushed motor you will need to keep run times at 6 minutes or the motors will get too hot and wear out prematurely.

yeah 6 mins. isnt very long , i think i will have to get the nitro back and running if i want longer runtimes.

Now if i were to go brushless, im guessing it would get better speed and runtimes right ? not sure i want to spend that much either , hmmmmm , so a better battery and a better brushed motor and my rustler should be up to speed. But now i just need to buy the part 3632 , i had a head on wit hmy buddy's savage . And yeah its a f$cking tank that truck , rollcage and eth whole kit made of aluminium.

you can get long runtimes. You just have to invest in a large capacity lipo battery.
