I'm looking to get this kit:

I would like to start racing on carpet. Are there any must have hopups or can I run this car straight out of the box with my own electronics.

One of my favorite cars of all time.
Unfortunately it is kind of being bypassed for the newer, modern F104 (and other) 180/190mm chassis.
The current F1 frenzy is heavily in favor of the 180mm cars of which there are several to choose from so you may want to take into consideration where you want to run/race it and see what is being favored.
My hope is to see F1 explode to the point where there are 2 classes of them which will include 180/190mm current "Realistic" models as well as "Vintage" cars.

Get a decent shock(3racing or Tamiya TRF) all the bearings you need because the kit is only spupplied with rear axle ballbearings.
Depending on what motor you are going to run get the alloy motormount or complete motorpod kit and the Pro dif kit and some good tires(soft rear, medium front).
Last point, get the soft or high traction t-bar.
That is what i would do when running this car on carpet.

I'm now running the F103, its a perfect car for racing, you only need :
- alloy or titanium turnbuckle for the steering
- some spur gear (tamiya stock 48dp or the hopup 64dp (0,4 module))
- the TRF shock (oil and spring supplied with the shock))
That the only hopup you really need for start !
Ball bearing are in the box, so, dont need to buy a set.
You can, if you want, buy also a Tamiya link type front end, and some hard front spring.

Anybody out there using the Exotek F1R conversion for their F103 ?? Already a thread for the F104 but wondering how it is with the 103 parts.

Thanks, for the replys. I am on a tight budget and the F103 fits the bill. The track I will run it is mostly F103s. For now I will run the silver can motor and Lipo.
Is there an online source in the US that carries parts?

God News!
You can find many a F103 Kit in E Bay (F103RM) some go for as little as $95.00 plus arrount $35.00 for shiping (they all come from HK or JP)
There is one easy and inexpensive Le Mans Body set for the F103 - The Toyota GT One, I just got one.
Re relased by Tamiya you can finf it at TQ Racing or Speedtech.
Have fun!

For the shock do you think a touring car shock will fit? I have a real nice HPI shock set not doing anything.

It's an F103R chassis with a Tamiya Type-C body & front wing (Castrol Lotus 107B Ford). The rear wing is a Type-T (Tyrrell Yamaha 023).

The "best" would be the 15th anniversary version because of the hopup in the box.
You can take a F103 RM with a few hopup (TRF damper, turnbuckles), very good car !

Quick question. Will f104 rubber tires fit on f103 wheels? Will f104 rubber tires and rims fit an f103? Thanks.
