HEY,

Ive looked all over these threads but cant seem to find the info im looking for, i just bought a pack of itellect ip4200 cells. i was going through the break in process and cycling them charging at 6 amps, and discharging at 20, the usual set up for my 3700 packs, about 15 min into the charging i noticed a hissing sound comming from the cells. I did read that that is called venting, and is only when the batterys get hot, they vent. is this a bad thing, are the batterys crap? or this this pefectly normal??

Its "normal" I guess, but not good. It basically means the cells are going bad.

Yea, definately not a good sign. Any packs that have vented on me...I tossed. IB4200s are junk for quality...

Nope not a good sign at all. Cells may vent during charging but when you hear it it's not good. Try the Slingshot EP cells out. They are comperable to the IP, imo they are better, and more rugged.

Also, What charger are you using and what cell in the pack is hissing. It could also be a bad solder joint creating more resistance in that cell generating heat. It could also just be a bad cell. After disharging them did you balance each cell after discharging? Whats your cut off voltage on the discharge and how long after dumping them at 20 amps did you wait before you started charging.

yeah when cells start hissing there usually 5-6 months old, but if there new thats not a good sign at all.

2 of my 4200 packs vented on their first charge but still work..dont thnk they will last the same and now i have to watch them closely when they do charge

i have the new checkpoint t1030 charger, think thats the model number, i normally dump at 20 amps, n charge around 6. Peak mv at 300, i was told 50mv per cell. Sounds like an overall hissing, pack was built about 3 months ago, first charge was yesterday when i noticed this, i cycled the pack overnight, looked at it this morning, and saw that the pack was holding a decent charger at 8.356 volts? Just fiigured i would get a little more out of the pack, i got the pack for 20 bucks, so if i can get a few months out of it ill be happy!

any opinions for a good equalizer, dont need one to discharge, my charger does that for me

Five minutes isn't enough for the batt to cool down. I can't remember what Promatch recommended for break-in but I'm pretty sure it wasn't @ 6A.

Promatch recommends a 4amp charge for 10 minutes then equalize the cells and charge at 5 to 6 amps but never get the cells above 130 degrees.

yeah my friend Ray, he was at the cactus and his cells were coming off 270 degrees, but they didnt explode just swelled up, hehe.

Also, The cells should be allowed to cool to room temprature before rechaging. I sit them on a fan when they are discharging and waiting to get on my smart tray.
