You have to run X5R shocks with X5R towers. The R towers are angled in more for the longer shocks.
The X5R & mbx5T shocks shafts are the same.

The MBX5 is really cheap right now and I figure I can get that and upgrade parts as they break/wear out.
anyone?

All of the 5R parts will go on the old MBX5 no problem. If you do add the 5R/T shocks to the old car, you will need the 5R shock towers. Then you will have to either limit your droop or hit the arms and chassis with a dremel so that the lower shock end doesn't bind on the arm and the lower arm doesn't hit the chassis before the droop screw at full droop. Also you will need the 5R upper arms as with full droop the ackerman to steering rod connection will hit the upper arm if the wheels are turned at full droop. The new E0109B front uprights on the 5R also allow for more droop and steering so I recommend those regardless.

Best regards,

Thanks Tony,
Can you explain what effect this added droop will have on handling?

The 5R has a TON of more droop than the old MBX5. It sucks up the rutts and bumps so much better. I also credit the better 5R/T shocks too. BUT, you do have to be careful and limit that droop some as I think the 5R with full droop has too much. And of course if the track conditions call for it, you may have to limit that droop even further. If you haven't followed the Mugen MBX5 since its first release over 4 years ago, most probbaly wouldn't know that the car went through dozens and dozens of running changes. The 5R is the result of what Mugen learned over all those years.

Well, 4 more days, and i will have my 5r. Cant wait to see how it handles compared to my 8ight. Atleast the front steering parts should last longer.

The droop on the 5R is rediculious at full extension. Also, the droop makes the steering toe-out a lot at the full extension. I set droop back to almost mbx5 level. It really wasn't need for my track.

MBX5 --> MBX5-R conversion, use the search button.

I just pulled my clutch apart to have a good look. 10L on the bearings and they're still smooth. I'm replacing them, but only because it's been 10L, not because they need it. Springs are still in good condition. The only thing I'm forced to replace are the shoes as they're fairly well worn.

I came from an 8ight to the MBX5R. I like how they both drive but they are different. I wouldn't go with the stock Mugen setup on the diffs, everything else is close to start with. I went with 7-7-3 in my diffs, no rubber washers. I'm still experimenting with the diffs but it's close.

5-7-2 is dialed just about anywhere on the Mugen buggy.

3-5-2 is also often a good choice. Now i have tried the kyosho big-bore shocks on my 5r a couple of times. Wow.. It just floats over the ruts and bumbs, and landings are super smooth. running 350 oil and purple springs. Dont remember preload, but bones are about level.
