Default Thunder Road RC Speedway

05/12/07 Race Report

Another fun day of oval racing at Thunder Road. Despite a beautiful spring day, a group of dedicated oval racers gathered indoors to test the carpet and competition; and some close and furious racing followed.

Spec Class benefited from the absence of one Steve Walker, Beach, who was living up to his name somewhere down in the Carolinas. That left the rest of us, who were getting a bit tired of being left by Beach, with a chance of getting a look at the front spot. Robbie (Tripod) Bingler was back in action after a long health related absence from the racing scene, and looking strong, as he led most of the heat action. I was able to press him in the first heat, and Oliver Campbell chased hard in the second; but Robbie had things pretty much his own way for most of the day.

Joel White dominated the heats in Stock, with Clayton Anderson and Harold Ruckle offering occasional challenges. Big Clay and Harold had some good dustups, but neither looked capable of mounting a serious challenge.

Spec led off the Mains, with Joel sidelined due to ESC problems and me calling the race due to a radio problem. With his strongest challengers sidelined, that left Robbie to disappear into the distance, as Oliver Campbell fought a sudden handling problem. Harold Lam finally fought his way past Oliver around half distance, and set off to chase down Robbie. Robbie was still running strongly, but Harold now had the bit firmly in his teeth; knocking off a few tenths each lap. As the final minute started clicking down, Harold had Robbie in his sights; and he had plenty of time left to make his move. Robbie however, had other plans. Robbie started clicking off fast laps, stringing together a series of quick laps that blunted Harold’s challenge. With only a few seconds left, Harold, determined not to be denied in his bid for his maiden win, ripped off some blistering times to close to Robbie’s bumper. Time ran out, with Harold still a second behind at the buzzer; as Robbie celebrated his return with a TQ and win.

TQ’er Joel White had the Stock Class covered, just as he had all night long. Clayton and Harold trailed in order and everything looked set for a boring procession to the checker. With a minute to go, Joel seemed to falter; and suddenly Big Clay was all over him. Clayton slipped past with a few seconds remaining to take the win; and Harold missed grabbing second by less that a second.

Our summer Oval points series is going to be interesting. Next week it's back to the road course. Details, directions, maps and more at thunderroadrc.com. Thanks; Ernie P.

Thunder Road Summer Series 2007 Scoring

Both Oval and Road Course will run six races. Each racer’s best (highest points) four finishes will be scored. Each racer may elect to skip two races; with those races being “dropped” from the results. Should a racer miss three or more races, his series standing will be determined by the points total from the races actually run.

Scoring for both Oval and Road Course will be as follows:

Winner in each Class will receive one point for each paid entry. Ten entries will award ten points to the winner; nine entries nine points to the winner, etc. TQ in each Class will receive one additional bonus point. Should there not be sufficient entries to run a Class, that race date will be considered a “drop” for that Class only.
More than two “dropped” races for lack of attendance will drop that Class from the series.

Winner in each Class will receive an engraved trophy.

A Track Champion Trophy will be awarded to the racer scoring the highest combined total points scored from all Oval and Road Course Classes.

For both Oval and Road Course Classes: In the event of a tie score for each Class Champion, the tie will be broken by a heads up, ten lap race between the tied racers only. This special shootout race will be held 30 minutes after final standings are announced, following the conclusion of the final Series Race (August 5 for Road Course, September 1 for Oval).
