how to shim a motor?

directions
1. put the motor together w/o shims.
2. holding the motor with the armature horizontal, push the armature each direction in the can and let it return to center (it will get pulled to the center of the magnetic field). note where it rests.
3. place shims in motor where appropriate to keep the armature at the location determined in step 2 (above), leaving .1-.3mm of slack.
4. repeat step 2, to verify your accuracy.
5. done.

5a. repeat steps 3 and 4 until correct.
notes:
I. the bushings will impose drag on the armature which will make it stop short of the center each way. take the average of both directions.
II. the endbell screws will have an effect on the apparrent center. don't hold the motor together w/o them. reassemble it fully each time.

I ll try to make this as painless as possible, and quick too:
- Take out all shims from your armature, remove brushes and springs.
- Put armature in can and screw endbell on
- Put a pinion gear on motor
Spin manually the armature, as it stops it will center itself between the magnetic fields, leaving play on both sides (endbell side and can side)
Shim one end (where you seem to have most play) and repeat process, adding shims on both ends until you have very little play left (ie you can feel some play but do not see it).
As you spin your armature, it will recenter itself each time.
Once done, This means your magnets will not "pull" or "push" the armature, giving you better efficiency..
