that must be poking out of the bottom of the chassis I'm suprised it's not turned into the nice smooth disc by now

how about placing a thin sheet of plastic over the opening of the chassis and tape around the outer edge?

I cover the whole bottom chassis except the motor hole.
Not sure if it's a good idea.

I use Loctite glue remover. Apply, set it down for a minute, then it become gooey. WD40 or Goo Gone afterwards.
