how about placing a thin sheet of plastic over the opening of the chassis and tape around the outer edge?

I cover the whole bottom chassis except the motor hole.

I use Loctite glue remover. Apply, set it down for a minute, then it become gooey. WD40 or Goo Gone afterwards.
