Why not try a chassis that is narrow and close to what you want, then just add wings off the side of it to meet up to the body shell? This can then be done in a much lighter material and can be kicked up to avoid scraping.

Because this is a hobby. And sometimes it's fun to make stuff for the sake of fun...
