Default Super Capacitor (1 Farad)

I am about to do some research on insane capacitors for ESC purposes. It's rated at 1 Farad versus 2200 micro Farad (0.0022 Farad) which is included with most of the Novak ESC's. This capacitor will measure about the same as Quantum ESC, so it's very small. I'll let you know what I find out, but maybe there's a market for this if the results are positive. I've obtained 2 of them, but need 2 more to make it work.

I'm surprised that a 1 farad cap can be that small... Rivergate sells some .5 and 1 farad caps that look to be the size of beer cans...

Default Yeah

Yeah, these are brand new. I have yet to do some tests to see how they will perform.

Default Size

It's the size of a LRP Quantum ESC. Very small.

YEah...in Car Audio applications, a 1 FARAD cap for our 12V systems in cars (well upwards of 14.4V sometimes) is the size of a VERY LARGE AND TALL beer can....

I would tend to think something the size of a Quantum can't handle at least 10V and have 1 Farad...

Default Uh

Well, they are actualy 2.5V caps at 4 Farad. So I have to stack 4 of them together to get 10V but that will drop it to 1 Farad. I only have 2 of them and the company hasn't gotten back to me about getting 2 more. One of them measures about 1.7cm x 1.2cm x 0.3cm. I have to get 2 more to do tests. I hope they get back to me soon.

I would rather use a 10V 10000 uF cap and that will do the job less trouble!!

Ya know what happens to a capacitor when you put too much voltage into it?

KABOOM!!!!

You ALWAYS use a capacitor that is rated at double the highest possible voltage it will experience or you risk KABOOM!

Exclamation

Be aware that small voltage and high capacitance capacitors are generally not designed to do what normal caps are supposed to do . They tend to have a poor ESR rating and hence may give worse results than the original one. They wont react quickly as the smaller ones so they wont charge nor discharge as quickly to give the filtering / smoothing properties (the 1 Farad mini caps with the size of a 5 small coins stacked together are used for memory backup as they can hold charge like a battery! minute currents only!). Also think about the capacitor in a flash light, it takes ages to charge and yes it does give a big bang of a discharge, but that in the wrong equipment can harm the circuitry aroung it......

Becareful also if you got the polarity wrong, it also will go bang.... wear protective glasses if possible... I work with big power supplies and I have see them go!

Cheers!

Default Caps

Just one more point..... if you want to experiment:

BEcause Caps of different values charge and discharge differnetly,
Generally smaller are faster.... by connecting differnt valued caps in parallel will give a very discharge charateristic which can give better results. For expamle.... 2 x 4700uF in parallel is better than 1x 10.000uF . Manufacturer dont tdo that to save money and board space....

I use this method in all my designs in audio equipment.... and it really works!!!

www.sonneteer.com

remember, speakers is like a motor.... it needs power and instantaneous acceleration adn braking!!!!! and the impedance is 2-16 Ohm only so it is a heafty load too!!!
