Aside from Tower, is there a place I can purchase non-marring pliers? (shock shafts) Sears has nothing other than plier covers and 4inch non-marring wrench.

Send them an email. I purchased a set of shock pliers from them. It was a single pair of pliers that had three different size holes through the jaws. The pliers are steel, but the holes were inset with brass or some other softer metal that doesn't mar my shock shafts.

I have a hobbico one, but yeah got it from towerhobbies. If you know what it looks like one piece is open and the other is rounded. Needle Nose pliers. This is what you use on shock shafts.

If you can see it , its the piece right before the cutting , near the inside. Looks like it would slip all day but it grabs it nicely.

What I use is a little of tissue paper (WC paper, the one you use for... well... you know ) get a piece and make some layers with them (with 2 or 3 layers is enough), wrap it around the shock shaft and hold then with a suitable plier (if you have one enough small to capture the shock shaft like I do, you will not marr anything, been doing for many many many years up to today).

gday performula, rogue elementfrom usa make a shock shaft tool! it is a machined alluminium spring loaded plier with 3 finger grips on one side. i've been using these pliers for over a year now and they're comfortable to use and can't damage the shock shaft because they are much softer than it. easily got to be the best tool especialy invented for this job! a must if you can find one, cheers joe

I was wrong in that they don't have a brass insert, but I use them all the time and they dont scuff the shock shafts. The only thing I don't like about them is I wish the handle was a little bit bigger, but I can certainly deal with them the way they are.

I was thinking two damaged (so I do not deface) pennies over the shaft, then the pliers.

Another way to do it is by using a set of Dykes (wire cutters) and grip the shock shaft near the threads. This is how I always did my shocks before I purchased the Rogue shock pliers.

Well I picked up those Craftsman 'Robo' pliers with covers. Worked great great for awhile, but after a few uses the teeth went through the covers. Thank god didn't did mar the shafts, but I was gripping the shock body to screw on the shock caps. So pissed about it too.

I wonder if the Tamiya pliers are OK for gripping shock bodies?
