I am looking for a low-end engine temp reader....e.g Venom Temp Monitor.
Does it give immediate temp reading like the Infra-red ones?
Or gotta wait for the temp to rise slowly till the max...?!?

Any1 has a Venom Temp Monitor? Kindly share some info on how much time does it take to obtain the final temp reading...as we know taking engine temp reading should not more than 5 sec. right into pit...after hot laps...

The Wire loop type on temp monitors are really like Chrome plating the Valve covers on your real cars engine. Looks nice but really doesn't do much else. I suggest saving a little longer and buying the Raytech temp gun about ($80 usd) verses the Venom temp monitor (about $40 usd). If your racing then the Gun type is the only way to go for the accuracy. The "Spit" test is about as accurate as the wire loop type of monitor.

The Venom temperature gauge can be switched on constantly during a run. It will record the highest and lowest temperature of the engine. It will also give you a reading of a "live" temperature as what it is on the engine head.

There is a button for you to recall the highest and lowest temperature recorded during the run when the unit is switched on. When you switch it off, the memory will be erased. You also have the option to view the temperature in degree Celsius and Fahrenheit.

From my experience, when the engine is hot, it takes about 3 seconds from the time the Venom unit is switched on to read the engine temperature.

Radio shack has one. It's the same type as the Raytek.

I've found that most of the Wire loop type monitors are +/-, 10-20 degrees off in their readings. If you borrow a Temp gun to verify the accuracy then you will know the correction factor. This would work as long as you don't disturb the Thermocouple loop. For bashing anything is probably fine. For racing, the added accuracy is definitely a benefit.

I did compare the MIP monitor to my Rayteck and the MIP was always off by 20F degs. Never the same either. Sometime to the plus side and sometimes to the negative. I'm sure this had to do with the loop maybe moving slightly when jumping (off-road) or crashing. I have an Exergen also now and it reads about 10 degrees cooler than my Rayteck. Which do I prefer? I usually go with the Raytech as it is a little easier to hold and carry at the track.

ive noticed the raytek is usually 20 degrees off exergen i trust exergen but i dont see myself spending 250 for it

i plan to do alot more tuning by sound and smoke this year than temp

yeah second that jason102276 - I used a temp gun a lot as I learned to tune. But as I went through more and more engines I found myself using it less and less. Now the temp gun only makes it out of my pit box if I happen to want to check the temp during the first few tanks of break-in. Sound and smoke are much better once you have the experience.

The temp gun maybe could be useful for checking track / tire temperatures but other than that it's no longer useful for me. I'm really glad I didn't spend the $$$ on an exergen.
