Best way to clean a piston?
#3
metal polish, and then clean it with motor spray... don't contaminate the side of the piston, especially around the top of the piston, it will screw up the seal between piston and sleeve... you have to be very careful doing this..

I used
I use that really fine sandpaper that is foam backed that is used on furniture. It contours to the metal, and creates a nice finish, and doesn't cause any issues, just remember to clean any parts that you use it on really well with denatured alcohol. That reminds me I need to get some more of that foam sandpaper. It also cleans the crankshaft where the clutch bearings ride, looks brand new.....I find all kinds of uses for that stuff. Cleaning pipes and manifolds too.....

I would remove the piston and conrod from the engine and use soap water and a toothbrush to remove the carbon buildup. if the buildup doesnt come off, rub it off with a rag or very very lightly with scotchbright under running water. after blow off water with a compressor. Thats my method anyways
