Default Best way to clean a piston?

I have a piston that is totally black on the top. Burnt fuel or something. Anyhow I've tried brake clean and a couple other products and it just will not remove.

What's the best way to get this off?

its carbon build up, take a scotch brite pad with some simple green should wipe off. just remember to really clean the piston of dirt before reinstalling the piston

metal polish, and then clean it with motor spray... don't contaminate the side of the piston, especially around the top of the piston, it will screw up the seal between piston and sleeve... you have to be very careful doing this..

Not sure if it works with a completely black piston, but after run oil always seems to do the trick.

Default Performance issue?

Is the black piston creating a performace issue? If not, then why would you worry about cleaning it?

Seems to me you risk damaging other parts of your engine by taking appart to clean a superficial issue.

Default I used

I use that really fine sandpaper that is foam backed that is used on furniture. It contours to the metal, and creates a nice finish, and doesn't cause any issues, just remember to clean any parts that you use it on really well with denatured alcohol. That reminds me I need to get some more of that foam sandpaper. It also cleans the crankshaft where the clutch bearings ride, looks brand new.....I find all kinds of uses for that stuff. Cleaning pipes and manifolds too.....

I may be wrong but i think they are also known as Drywall sanding blocks.

I would remove the piston and conrod from the engine and use soap water and a toothbrush to remove the carbon buildup. if the buildup doesnt come off, rub it off with a rag or very very lightly with scotchbright under running water. after blow off water with a compressor. Thats my method anyways
