We are happy to be able to announce the control tyre for the 2013 Nats has been chosen:
All driven wheels in all classes are to be shod with Pro Line M3 Suburbs.
In testing undertaken, 8 different sets of rubber were considered from the leading manufacturers, the Suburbs provided the best combination of both forward traction and side bite on our surface, and the M3 compound was chosen to provide an all purpose approach to varying types of weather.
Typically, the weather in Mildura for this time of year average's out at around a top of 25 deg. with overnight lows averaging around 10 deg. The overnight lows were also considered in choosing a tyre and compound that would work all day, not just when it gets warmer in the arvo.
Upon prior consultation with the importer, it is hoped and planned to have plentiful stocks available either through the club or from your LHS from mid/late January. Plenty of time for practice, the Mallee Madness warm up event on 3/3/13, and of course the big show in April. Tyre prices from the club have been set at $14 for buggy, $18 for truck, and $20 for SCT.
The standard foam insert will be the control insert.

Further to the post and update relating to control tyres...
The more investigative punters amongst you may have noticed that both the 4wd front and truck tyre are not listed on the Pro Line website in the M3 compound. Some may have even seen information pertaining to this tyre being discontinued...I can assure you that this is not the case, and we have received assurance from Pro Line USA that these tyres will be available in the required quantities.

In regards to SCT tyres only, can the tyre be hole punched rather than the rim? With the closed cell inserts they tend to vent better this way...

Well I just purchased some fronts and rears this morning from my lhs. The distributor does have buggy rears in stock and is also expecting a delivery in early january so supply should not be an issue.......i suppose if they went for a harder compound you would whinge when they dont work in the morning?

Kudos to mildura for giving us this info nice and early

We'll have to wait and see exactly how SCT is written into the rules now that it is a sanctioned class, but my guess would be that it will use the same control tyre regs as the other classes for simplicity, and therefore you won't be able to.
