The 40wt oil is going to feel like a really loose ball diff. Most are running between 1000cst to 2000cst in a gear diff. The way I was explained was if you have a high traction track you can run a lighter oil and if you have a lower traction track you can run a thicker oil. AE 70wt shock oil is 900cst and their 80wt is 1000cst. I would adjust according to the available traction you have. I run 2000cst in my cars at my home track which is low to med grip.
XRAY recommends 600 to 800 cst for low traction tracks and 900 to 2000 cst for higher traction tracks for a rear differential. Softer oil increases rear reaction and harder (thicker) oils increase on power steering. if you are running a front diff the consensus is around 300,000cst oil.
Jerz you say thick oil low-mid, thinner high bite
were as
GP40X quoting XRAY states the opposite.....
Also I think you meant softer oil increases rear traction and not reaction.
From researching the AE gear diff runs 30-50wt on team setups with a spool up front in TC on high bite tracks.
The Spec-R gear diff was in the 1000cst - 3000cst range.
I did notice one AE team drivers setup that he was running 2000cst on high bite carpet.
Well test and tune time.

25.5 novak
Hi
I ran my first VTA races last nite.. The question about usvta rules 25.5 motor..my endbell timing at 38deg and fdr gearing is 3.80 ..the motor came off the track very cool at 110 deg.. I did gear at 3.6 at first heat and it wasn't any faster than 3.8fdr
but I was able to shave .5 off my best paces...3.8 fdr
what is the best gearing and timing for this novak 25.5? large carpet track

I just finished building a Tamiya F1 car. They have some awesome drivers. Perfect for VTA too. The 1/10th driver figure that came with the car would be a nice scale choice for VTA. I put the face shield on him. That didn't come with the kit. Just cut it from scrap lexan.
Next time you are at your LHS or looking on line, check for Tamiya F1 driver figures. There are several they make.

i just ran my firs vta race last weekend my car is a 415 msxx mre and im running the tekin rs pro and tekin 25.5, ive noticed these motors take a bit of time to get the right timing and gearing just right, our track is like 90x50 or somewhere around there and i ended up running 30 degrees on can with a 4.0 fdr, i still have to do some more testing, id like to lower the fdr a bit and see how it runs, im coming off the track at 150 degrees with no fan, maybe add some more gear and less timing
