Serrated Wheel Nuts--Love 'em or hate 'em?
#17
The only time I've lost a wheel was because the hub carrier went with it.
Just had a thought: why not make a wheel clip similar to body clips if this is such a common problem? Drill a pin hole through the wheel bolt and use a small paperclip to bend your own large diameter clip (where the middle of the "W" is large enough to go around the wheel bolt). They'd be light enough and not stick out very far so centripetal force shouldn't throw them out and they're easy enough to make (and cheap). Consider it extra insurance against losing a wheel.

Teflon tape
I scored grooves on the back side of the wheel nuts but also put a couple wraps of plumbers Teflon tape around the threads so the nut has a bit more to bite on. I haven't ever had a wheel nut come off. I do tighten them after every race too.
You can see in a close up of my car a little bit of the tape showing through.

How about putting wave washers on behind the nut? Will keep pressure on the nut and prevent it from spinning off.

Air pick up a pack of HB or Hpi black wheel nuts and you'll forget about loosing wheel nuts all together....but Be warned....Do Not over tighten them.....there have been time's where it felt like i was going to Rip the foams in some of my Super Soft panter's before the nuts would crack off.....I now bring my 10.8 Makita impack driver and it gets em off with ease....and you look cool doin it.

Im a total beliver in these, they are a true mill spec 7075 nut with a flange and dimples to help grip the wheel and at $8 they are a steal. Although around 1/2 gram heavier than normal wheel nuts
