Default Will this glow plug work?

Hi Everyone,

I've got a Novarossi Big Block 28 truggy engine, and I bought an on-road C9 glow plug this weekend ( The guy from the HobbyShop said it should be fine ). I struggled a lot to keep the engine running with this glow plug, as soon as I put in the C6 glow plug ( which came with the engine ) it was smooth sailing.

Is it because the on-road glow plugs differ to off-road and therefore cant be used on off-road engines, or is it that the plug is too cold ( our temps that day were about 28c - 30c, reason why I bought the colder plug ), or is there something else I must take into account when switching plugs and might be why I had problems?

Thanx.

Even the C6 isn't super hot. Stick with the C6 if it's working for you.

NR just came out with very hot heavy duty plugs that are supposed to be close to as good as a OS P3. I Forget the #'s.

I usually run as hot of a plug as I can. Pull the head to check for detonation pitting, after 9gallons it's ok to me to see some speckles.

The onroad plug might have been too cold, or it might have had too much room inside it (less compression).

Thanx for the response.

Why do you run as hot of a plug as possible?
The problem I've got is that when I've got the engine tuned with that perfect note ( max performance ), it gets too hot ( water test and the water instantly sizzles away ) thats why I figured a colder plug might just solve that problem.

Basically a hot plug is easier to tune, once you start to venture out to colder plugs your tuning window is smaller and smaller, there is a very nice article floating around about glow plugs, I will see if I can find it....

Thanx would be a great help.
Seems like a lot of people have their own theories reggarding glow plugs.
I read once, that a colder plug should be used on colder days and
vise versa.

Glow plug theory is not that complicated, but yes there are many variables, like nitro %, outside temperature, humidity, altitude, etc. But one thing remains constant, hotter plug will and can mask a bad tune.......

So the hotter the plug, the easier it is to tune?
Thats interesting, always thought the tune stays the same regardless of what plug you use.

When you change plugs colder to hotter or vice versa you need to retune the engine, and yes the colder the plug the smaller the tuning window. It's the same when you change nitro content, or even pipes, everything has effect on the engine.

The reason I love nitro!!
If I use a colder plug, is the engine usually set leaner, or is it not that simple?

yes you can run it leaner than a hot plug, but as I said the sweet spot is going to be a little bit more elusive....
