Hi, I'm chasing a few opinions and constructive advice about which truck/truggie/buggy to buy. I have a 10 acre property which is dirt, grass but is fairly rough.... Therefore I was going to buy a truck, like mta4 s28 or s50 or savage X 4.6 which are in my 400-500 price range...

But now after a couple of weeks research I'm more lost than when I began. I'm more into dirt drifting, racing, jumping than just pure bashing.. So having never driven a truck, I'm wondering how bad they really handle and whether they are worth even racing with my mate who is looking to buy one too...

Sorry for long post... I should have just written Dirt/Grass/Jumps/Race for fun, Truck, Truggy or Buggy?

As you get deeper into this hobby, you will find that it will be more important to you that your vehicle jump,fly, land and corner predictably. If you have basher tendancies, the right vehicle will help you evolve. With that amount of land you can take offroad rc to the next level. I own (3) d8t truggys (tripplets). I started with buggys. I would never own/waist money on a "monster-truck" as they handle terribly, buggys are too squirrely and hard to tame, more controll effort needed. truggys are the way to go. LONG/LOW/WIDE. they handle well and look great doing it.

Find an intermediate model in your area and go from there.:

If your wanting to race then get a truggy. I started out with a monster truck and it lasted about 10 minutes then I sold it to get a truggy. Even if you are just wanting to bash around on the farm or what ever then I would still go with a truggy. The monster trucks are built very cheap and break very easy.

HPI Savage is a very tough truck.

Handles quite well too. With a little coercion it will do all that you ask.

If you have that much room, the HPI Baja 5T really fits the bill. Frankly it drives like a giant 2wd 1/10 stadium truck. Just a lot bigger version.

Though a truggy with a .28 engine will provide a lot of fun; most race-oriented truggies just don't do well in anything but dirt or very short grass. Anything else gets to be an obstacle pretty quickly.

Since you said an extremely rough area I say get a Monster Truck. The S50 has gobs of torque and can pull the savage backwards, makes a great Basher.

Savage X4.6 is a nice good truck also. Not as much torque as the MGT .50, harder to work on.
Truggies are nice also , but they do not handle the rough stuff well.They do not have the ground clearance like a MT, If the rough stuff has no rocks in it , then truggy will handle it better than normal, but can still get thrown around. They are also fun to run.
I would get the Monster GT 8.0 or s50 which is what it is called in your area.

I own all three and Truggy is the best all around platform for bashing, racing, extreme terrain, etc.

I'd go with a truggy if i was in your situation. The problem with monster trucks is they don't really do anything well, which is why the platform has all but died as of late. If you ever want to race then you have no other option but truggy or buggy, but i'd start with a truggy until you get things worked out with a track and etc. We all have an urge to be competitive and as much fun as bashing can be it gets boring really quickly. However bashing can certainly help you practice and learn the tendencies of your vehicle, but in the long run you'll get much more enjoyment out of a race ready rig vs a monster truck or bashing only setup.

Monster trucks are tall and have no center diff. No body really races them anymore, except for grins. They tend to be the darlings of the basher crowd. For bashing and general running around, I suppose they would entertain you. But don't ever expect to race and beat a truggy in most situations.

Caster racing has 2 truggies one for 450 dollars RTR Nitro, and brushless for 400, or less.

Personally, I would rather run a monster truck through the mud,rain,snow, creeks, hill climbs and 30foot jumps than a $$1,500 truggy, or even a $450 truggy.
Especially with a Monster GT or a Savage, way less chance of a 60-110 dollar chassis bending, from jumping off a dirt bank and landing on a truggy sized rock. That would bend or put a big ding in the flat pan chassis of a truggy.

If you definately wanna race, then Truggy.
I race on a track with my RC8T FT and Bash with my Monster GT 457.

You can buy the losi 8ight-t 2.0 rtr for $550 brand new, or if you wait for one to pop up i bet you can get a slightly used one for about $350-400. Thats if you want to go the rtr route.
