Does Adding a Directional Antenna to my RX help increase my range?
Hi there, I am running a low power VTX FPV system on my airplane and I am quite disappointed with my range of 428 ft.
I am using a RH Polarized antenna on my TX and a Dipole antenna on my RX. I was thinking about upgrading the antennas on my RX to have 1 RH clover antenna and a RH patch antenna.
My question is that will putting a patch antenna on the RECIEVER side even help with my range?
Thanks
Ardalan

Yes it will increase range dramatically if you use patch antenna. Patch antenna is directional and narrow beam. The Cons is that you need to constantly point the antenna toward you plane to get that range, anything from the side or behind the patch antenna will have null signal.

Okay. Is this true even if I am running a 10-25mW system?

Yes it will double or triple the range but that depends on the wattage power from the video transmitter.
For example:
Last time on 5.8ghz 25mw i could go up to 1.2km on patch.
On my 5.8ghz 200mw with Skew planar antenna on the receiver i get 2~3km range.
With 7db directional patch antenna on receiver i can get around 5~7km range punching above the clouds.
WIth helical antenna (directional) on receiver i can fly up to 9~13km range straight line.
If you don't believe me just visit my youtube channel and look for FPV/UAV flight here: https://www.youtube.com/user/3dxl/videos
Just check the front video clip for setup description about my antenna setup and enjoy my long range flight video.

How far do you think I'll go with a 25mW 5.8GHZ system with a decent receiver and a 11dB helical?
Also, same setup with 10mW.
Thanks
