Hi Guys,
Apart from John Hanson's reply (thank you) no-one above appears to realize that the NiMh cells can be quite deadly when they explode.
The most recent & spectacular failure I can quote was Sonny Pearces pack exploding at a Chargers indoor title event at Leo's old track. I was standing just outside the door of the upstairs pit room when it went off & if not for the wall inbetween I'm sure I would have been hit by parts of it. The race meeting was held up while everyone tried to figure out what had happened. Fortunately Sonny wasn't sitting at his pit bench when it went up or he may have lost an eye.
My point is this, so far I am surprised at the histeria surrounding LiPo's. They are far more reliable from my experience than NiMh's & as yet I've not seen anything more serious than swelling, so why are we treating them differently than the existing option, NiMh's.
I have however seen a lot of drivers with NiMh cells "hissing" because they've been overheated during charging & cells damaged from being dislodged from their mounting during race incidents & scraping on the ground. I've even had one example where one of our local juniors managed to short out his pack on the Carbon Fibre chassis plate when it had cut through the plastic shrinkwrap battery covers & burnt the chassis & destroyed the cells.
I also believe that towards the end of last year electric racing in at least one European country was completley shut down while they investigated recent problems with exploding cells. (i'm not completely sure of my facts on that one though)
Despite all of the problems with NiMh's we all soldier on blindly but when it comes to LiPo's everyone breaks into a sweat, all I'm asking is that the two types of cells be treated equally.
Once again these are my own personal observtions & not those of my beloved Logan Club.

Half the problem is that NiMh's look like very day batteries. The kind you find in your torch, tv remote,Toy cars.
Lipo's have a different look. Their not setting in a torch under the kitchen sink, in your sons toy car set,
If they Look Different they must be deadly, evil sporn of the devil himself.
Both can kill if misused.
Take care with all batteries even the small AA cell has a warning on it.

I would urge all clubs to instruct there drivers to obey manufactures recommendations on charging, discharging, equalizing and storing there batteries.
This also includes, inspecting the cells for damage, including the insulation around the cells, battery bars are bent for a reason to keep an air gap to the outside casing of the cell at the positive pole end of the battery.
If a battery bar is pushed onto the cell at the positive end of the battery there only the heat shrink to insulate it.
There is a lot of info on Harris and Feral web sites on battery maintenance, I suggest drivers read it or whats on the manufactures web site or paper work that came with the battery.
I have email AARCMCC, Harris and Feral for there comments and hope to have some guide lines for clubs to follow in the near future.

starting time is 10.00am, the venue is to be announced shorty.
I invite all member clubs to participate and attend the AGM, nominations for Committee positions will close 14 days prior to the meeting, on the 12/4/08.
Candidates will be listed on this forum and the ORRCA web site 7 days prior to the meeting.
I've attached the nomination form, which I'd like either posted to the ORRCA's Po Box or scanned and emailed to [email protected] by the due date, 12/4/08.

"ORRCA Qld Inc is an incorporated body run by a management committee elected annually at the Annual General Meeting of affiliated clubs. Voting rights are allocated one per club. Only clubs can become voting members of ORRCA. Ordinary (non-voting) membership is offered to any person who is a financial member of an affiliated club and on whose behalf the club pays ORRCA the prescribed fee."
