I run analog servos on my throttle and digital servos on the steering..For throttle use you can have problems with digital servos..Digital servos dont like to be stalled (like what happens when you hit the brakes) when you stall a digital servo it increases the power to the servo to over come this "stall"..I run a good analog servo (airtronics 94357 or a 94358) and I have never had any problems with them..
Thanks for the tid-bit that is something that I didn't know. Let me ask you this; I have heard know thing but Horror stories about there customer service.

I run a Lipo with a regulator, what is the advantage of not using a regulator? does it shorten the run time? I just bought a new DX3R is there a chance it can damage the receiver?

More voltage equals more torque and speed, at the possible expense of damaging or shortening the life of the servo. Some recievers can't take that kind of voltage either.
Best to check with the manufacturer of each component to see what sort of voltage they can handle. The majority of it can do 6 volts, but an unregulated 2s lipo at full charge is around 8 volts which can damage things if unregulated.

I run Airtronics 94360's. They are the "high speed" servo's with the blue heat sinks. Although I did burn up a throttle servo in my 8ight 1.0 I sent it back and had it in two weeks and the charge was $35. I know Airtronics has taken up to 3 weeks on return though.
I know you are using the 8ight 1.0 Rob. I think you can use the radio tray from the 2.0 on the old car. The radio tray/throttle servo issue has been addressed on the 2.0. Just make sure if you get the radio tray that you also get the linkages for the center diff. They are longer due to the fact that the radio tray sits 7mm more to the right of the car.

curious how a 'brake stall' is any different than holding full steering through a sweeper etc.......

A stalled servo cannot further overcome the load that it is under.
Steering through a sweeper, the servo is holding a position which it is commanded to do... If it can no longer hold that position due to the force on the arm exceeding the servo's maximum output torque, then it's stalled.
If you're at full-lock steering the servo should not be stalled either. It's simply at its travel limit(endpoint), unless your mechanical setup is incorrect and causing binding.

I have a 4 year old Ace 1015 servo that went from 1/8 buggy steering to throttle and now it's my crawler steering servo. It's still cooking.
I have huge issues with Hitec's customer service, or lack there of. It's my issue and I won't elaborate on it.
I have always been taken care of by both JR and Futaba. Needed Hitec 3 times in one year, have needed JR once, haven't needed Futaba's customer service yet.

I heard from a few, that the "bad boy top of the line" JR servos are the way to go with the Losi 1.0. I fed my Losi 5 servos over 5 months, so I'm probably going to say don't use Hitec TG series servos for throttle. LOL!
I laugh now but back then OMG I was tilted...
Try the JR...
