Thinking of ideas to to clean up a track that has too many rocks in the dirt. Going to be a problem since a brand new chassis looks like you ran a full season after one practice day. The DERacing skid guards F/R have ripped away completely After some time and rain, the rocks are sticking out even further, and could even become a potential safety hazard.

Pretty much impossible to completely rebuild the track at this point. Any suggestions as to how we can maintain a solid top coat of nice dirt? Additives, etc.

Well this seems like it wasnt packed well you can put some more layers of dirt on and with a bob-cat with a shovel (not forks) press down on the dirt all the way around to compress it.

If you can, get a Skid Steer with a Harley Rake attachment. once we have the track almost to finish grade, we will harley rake it whick leave a rock free and easy to pulverized powdery dirt. Once we have every last area leveled and shaped we will roll it. it leaves and incredilbly smooth track and since it is packed it does not blow out. You can use additives like laundry detergent or several others to help the track groove.

hmm, laundry detergent... might give that a try.

Anyone have info on the basics of building a track? From the type of dirt, the prep work, and the equipment needed. That rake attachment is a little overkill for a club race budget.

did anyone screen the dirt? try adding silica sand and lime the sand should help pack the dirt and the lime should make it sticky. might work.

We had the chance to build the track from the ground up, but was pressed for a deadline so we could not screen the dirt. It resulted in a super rocky track where the rocks stick out like a grater. It's getting progressively worse as the dirt is eroding away. Now that things are settled down, we are talking about fixing up the track and needed more info. Keep them suggestions coming! Thanks

You might consider talking to the local dirt experts (Landscaping companies) and getting some info there that might help as well. With lime, sand, clay mixing etc, you want to make sure you have a track that will stick together well without blowing out and have good drainage but you also don't want a track that is too abrasive (too much lime or sand) which will cause tires to wear too fast.

That is typical of dirt that contains rocks. You took a shortcut with the build, now you are paying the price.

You have 2 choices:

1) Live with it as is... with the associated wear...


2) Rebuild the track and "screen" the dirt this time.

No matter what you do to it, as long as the rocks are there you are going to have this problem. The rocks will "float" to the top. If you put more dirt on top, eventually the rocks are still going to come through.

Just go through as a club every so often, and pull the rocks out. It's also a good time to pull weeds and do any grooming that's needed.

why not do 1/2 the track at a time theres more than enough room to rebuild slowly.

Hmm, at least there are no weeds to pull. Basically so rocky that the only thing that can live there is a cactus

It also seems like rebuilding the track is not an option either. Everyone is burned out from the first build and track admin. Hopefully people will take up the task once attendance starts to drop. Track just got worse though. So many holes that I can't even line up for the jumps properly.
