Use the Tamiya diff...

Other than that, you answered your own question. If the diff cups are bad, then they will eat the blades, even if there is only a little bit of wear. This will happen regardless of the size of blades.
Changing worn out blades is the best thing to stay on top of. If they are looking thin, then change them regardless... they are there to protect the driveline, so consider them consumables!
Spec-R do have some newer outdrives out, and I've also tried the Spec-R blades as well (I now have a good stock of Tamiya and Spec-R blades, hehe), but the biggest thing is to make sure the outdrives are in a good condition. I'll generally get over 10 runs with a modified out of a set of blades.
