My opinion for rear wheel drive cars is to keep the diff as loose as possible for maximum rear grip.

With a ball diff you have narrow window of having it loose but not slipping and having it slip. If the diff slips a lot then it'll wear out pretty fast.

With a gear diff there is no slip and you can run it with a thin coating of light grease.

So, I prefer and do use a gear diff in my M06.
