Just a quick question though - how far should i be pushing them? I have them coming off after a 5 min run at 65 ish degrees C - is there an optimal temp?

The temps you are pushing are very much in a safe zone at this point. I try to keep my motors under 160F (71-72C). The D3 will hold up to the temp very wll. So you could push it a bit harder but I have found that I usually do not need to push them much past 160F (71C) to get maximum power out of them.

Hope this helps
