I see what you are saying Lynn. Real photos are real photos. But...

I used HPI's guide sheet for placement of the stripes/decals. I just did some research and all the ones I find on the Mustang sites do it the same way HPI did. I was 10 in 1970. I remember the Boss Mustang then and in my teenage years for sure. I thought the "BOSS 302" was closer to the fender crest.

I think HPI got it right and the racers in your photos got it wrong. Must be that those racers repainted their cars and didn't apply the replacement decals properly? The cars below are likely factory editions.

Looks to me like the racers scooted theirs down to make room for their numerals.
