To be honest, whilst the 417 is the latest car (and I do believe is faster), you really can't go wrong with a used 416X. As you mention, your starting out in on-road, and the money you save on the 416 could be put towards other stuff (tyres?).
Both cars use the same suspension components, so all the usual spares will be available for a while.

And just a quick question to anyone; the white/blue/yellow springs that come with the kit, are they white short or yellow short or blue short or just normal white ?
As the short version of the same spring are softer, so when I try and compare, I know which one im doing xD.
