Having 1 on each side is defeating the purpose of shimming it.You want it on the ring side so it takes the slop away and puts the ring gear closer to the pinion.Usually, if your using 2 shims already and it still has too much backlash, then your gear casing is wore out.Best bet is just to replace the casing and start fresh. Once the pinion and ring gear start going bad from being too loose it gets a little bit more expensive to replace than just the gear casing.
