i run a carbon hpi shaft with a 6t hacker, (read buckets of torque!) and the shaft is fine. i recon it is at least 3 times lighter than the alloy shaft. i purchased some tobee alloy cups for the ends of the shaft, but decided to leave the stock plastic ones as they seem to work better with the alloy ends of the shaft. plastic on metal equals less friction/wear in my opinion.

i recon hpi or an aftermarket parts developer should make some carbon fibre cvd's. you could make them really thick and still save weight. IMAGINE THE BLING FACTOR!
