There is no need for a voltage cut-off in an ESC, as long as you are conscious of when the car is slowing down and stop it. If you are still worried, external low voltage cutoffs are available.

I run a brushed sealed can motor in my Xevo mini, with a Keyence ESC and a LiPo. The combo works brilliantly. Brushed motors still have a place in the hobby.
